![]() ![]() The "Confession" chapters strewn throughout the book were very effective in illustrating how kids growing up have to reconcile their past experiences and real emotions with new experiences that they aren't sure how to process. ![]() I could totally appreciate her perspective. ![]() Second, I really liked the authenticity of Hayley's voice. I can't keep up with all the books Isabelle brings home from the library, but she found a recipe in this book that we tried - the Spicy Mexican Chocolate "Hotheads", sans the spices so that we actually made regular molten chocolate cupcakes - and they were amazing!! So, I figured I'd give the book a shot.įirst, let me commend the author on her commitment to diversity! Not only is the protagonist's grandmother British, but her sister has an African-American friend, her father has a Thai girlfriend, they have a Pakistani neighbor, a Jewish friend with a gluten allergy has a crush on a Muslim, another friend has a sister with autism, and a classmate is BLIND! Seems like that's a pretty impressive cast considering the main characters are Caucasian. ![]() I am surprised myself that I am giving this book 5 stars! There are so many cupcake-themed books that I honestly never stopped to consider that any one or other might really be a worthwhile read. *** WARNING: This review contains spoilers!!! *** ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Evan, a Subterranean, has denied his own nature in order to protect Gemma, the girl he was sent to kill and with whom he has fallen hopelessly in love. This audiobook contains a surprise bonus novella- Bossy Brit. I would give four stars for the story and five stars for the performance, with an overall rating of 4.5 stars for Finding Alexei. The dynamic between Ryleigh and Alexei was great and the story very entertaining, and Jason Clarke and Erin Mallon definitely brought them to life exceptionally well. ![]() They became an insta-family of sorts, or at the very least, a unit that was close to what a family looked like. Like Ryleigh took it upon herself to take on the responsibility of caring for Ella while her roommate was MIA, Alexei went above and beyond in providing them with whatever they may need. After rescuing Ryleigh from an overly persistent customer, Alexei learns about Ryleigh's circumstances and decides to step in and help out. ![]() This was a sweet story about pro football player Alex Ivan-who introduces himself as Alexei to the female main character-and Ryleigh (no last name mentioned), a woman who finds herself suddenly caring for her roommate's baby girl, Ella. Finding Alexei was a good read, but it made for an even better audiobook, thanks to the combined efforts of author Kendall Ryan and narrators Jason Clarke and Erin Mallon. ![]() ![]() It posted advertisements for jobs with high wages in post offices throughout California, but only 800 men responded. For the initial work, the railroad needed 5,000 workers. It immediately faced its most imposing and dangerous task, cutting a route through the Sierra Nevada. Chinese Workers Power the Central PacificĪfter receiving its contract in 1862, the Central Pacific was set to begin construction by 1863. Part 5 notes who comprised the work force that built the Central Pacific railroad that began in California and drove eastward. Part 4 looked into the laborers who built the Union Pacific’s section of the Transcontinental Railroad, extending from Omaha, Nebraska to Promontory Point, Utah. Part 3 picked up discussing the laborers who build Russia’s transcontinental railway. Part 2 addressed the forces that gave rise to the need for a Trans-Siberian Railway. Part 1 was an introduction to the immigrant workers who comprised the majority of the labor force. ![]() This series that I have entitled “Who Built the Railroads?” focuses on the laborers who built the transcontinental railroad in the United States and the Trans-Siberian Railway in Russia. ![]() ![]() There are many interesting aspects of what the author has done here. Henning combines this real fear of witches on land with the story of the sea witch we all know from the Andersen tale (and the Disney remake). ![]() The Danes, especially under King Christian IV, put many "witches" to death in the 16th and 17th centuries. The story is set in 19th Century Denmark and is woven with hundreds of years of Danish history. Though, in many ways, Sea Witch is much smarter than I expected for a YA The Little Mermaid retelling. Any exciting witchy The Little Mermaid goodness you might be expecting happens in the later chapters, and even then it's pretty subdued. ![]() It's a very slowly-paced book, especially during the first two thirds of the story. ![]() And how easily you can sit through maritime chapters without falling asleep. It's really a question of how much patience you have. But I will say one thing: this book is probably not what you are expecting. ![]() Parts of it were 2 stars, other parts 4/4.5, so in the end I've settled on this. I gave myself a bit of a headache trying to rate this book. She is just as likely to bestow a kiss as to steal the breath from your lips.3 1/2 stars. ![]() ![]() ![]() So you may as well know what I'm thinking and save it up for later when it won't do any harm to anyone.'
